Goals and Objectives

Challenges

  • Sourcing and Tweaking a 3D Object

It was hard to find a car that would be suitable for the project. I eventually settled on the model I found because it was affordable and of a high quality. It did have numerous short-comings, mainly in the quality of the interior and the wheels. Building the interior myself was outside the scope of the project so I rebuilt the wheels for the static shots and tinted the windows so the interior could not be seen. This also meant I didn’t need to create/find a driver asset. As a result, I also had to direct the shots around these limitations.

  • Building the Environments

Building the environments was the most challenging and exciting part of the project. I wanted to create the environments myself so that I could make adjustments for the camera movements I had planned. I could have gone for more detailed environments but I wanted the car to be the focal point so I kept the environments simple. This was where the countless references I’d collected were incredibly useful.

Takeaways

  • Start With a Key Reference

I should start with a firm final product in mind, ideally from one of my reference sources. Unlike some of my other projects, I was trying to create a catalogue of different assets. While this has allowed for greater variety, it has made compiling these different shots in a way that looks cohesive difficult.

  • Environmental Detail

I’m happy with the environments but on reflection they look a little too simple. In future, I’ll spend more time fleshing out the environments with photo realistic textures and props.

  • Stick closer to reference material

Though I did adhere to my references, I could have followed them more closely and ended up with a more familiar and professional result. While it’s important to experiment and learn, when creating full projects for real clients, I’ll stick closer to established trends.
